ABSTRACT

On-site data records of solar radiation are required for environmentalists and engineers to establish any project related to solar electric power generator systems. Often existing meteorological observing systems provide such required data, however, they suffer from limited coverage areas which hinders many geographical locations with no data. Therefore, a smart and accurate system is required to predict solar radiation. This paper presents a comparison between two solar energy prediction systems that use geographical information system and neural networks to determine daily global solar irradiation in Nicosia, Cyprus. The experimental results show that the use of GIS in prediction of solar radiation, can be successfully used in real life applications.
