TITLE

Harnessing hBIM to Document Traditional Stone Bridges with the Creation of Smart Object Libraries

pdf PDF

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the creation of new smart object libraries for the 3D modelling of old stone bridges. Because of its cultural relevance, antique stone bridges represent historical worth, local culture, and exceptional architectural and engineering qualities. The use of a dedicated BIM for historic/heritage structures, known as hBIM, allows the production of detailed digital models of bridge structures, making it easier to analyze conditions, identify potential structural concerns, and plan maintenance interventions. Object libraries are an essential component of hBIM, as they provide pre-designed and parameterized objects that assure proper representation. One major challenge in hBIM is the representation of complex or unique shapes that reflect individual construction components. This study proposes the development of smart object libraries tailored specifically for arched stone bridges and specifically in families for the bow, the wing wall and the deck, each with unique details, with the goal of supporting heritage conservation plans by creating a 3D library of BIM objects related to typical elements of Balkan Peninsula bridge architecture, specifically in three case studies. Collaboration with varied experts was critical to the development of the approach and concept of the research, resulting in each generated object including correct geometric and architectural information for the future conservation of that element.
